When you need one
- If your vehicle is 12 years old or older, you will likely need to give your insurer a passing vehicle inspection report within 14 days of getting insurance.
- Some insurance companies have their own guidelines. If your provider asks for an inspection, you need one.
- If the vehicle was last registered outside Alberta, you need an out of province inspection to register it, whatever its age. Insurers will often accept that in place of an insurance inspection.
What to expect

We have the required form at the shop. When the inspection is done, you get the paperwork to give your insurance provider.
Get the vehicle ready
- Clear out extra cargo so every part of the vehicle can be reached.
- Take children's car seats out. Every seat belt is tested, and a car seat often blocks one.
- Leave the wheel lock key on the passenger seat or in the cup holder. The wheels come off for this inspection.
Timing
The inspection and paperwork take about 1 to 1.5 hours. Book as soon as your insurer asks for it, since they often allow 14 days. We recommend dropping the vehicle off, early in the day if you can, so there is time for any repair it needs without a second visit.
