Tire balancing in Calgary.

A steering wheel that shakes at highway speed usually means a wheel is out of balance. We check each wheel, correct it, and quote before any work starts.

Signs a wheel is out of balance

When all four wheels are in balance, the car tracks smoothly and the tires wear evenly. When one is off, you tend to feel it before you see it.

  • Vibration through the steering wheel while you drive
  • Steering that feels heavier than it used to
  • Tires wearing in odd spots
  • Fuel economy dropping for no clear reason
  • A humming sound coming from the tires

How we balance and rotate

We inspect each wheel first. If the tires are due for a rotation, we move them front to back and side to side so they wear evenly.

Then each wheel goes on a balancing machine. It finds the heavy spot, and we add small weights to the inside of the rim wherever a correction is needed.

If the car pulls to one side or the steering wheel sits off centre, the cause is more likely wheel alignment than balance. We can check both.

Tire balancing questions

It evens out the weight around each wheel and tire so it spins smoothly. That stops the vibration you feel through the steering wheel and helps the tires wear evenly.

A shaking steering wheel at speed, a humming from the tires, odd wear spots on the tread, or steering that feels heavier than normal.

Front tires wear faster than rear tires. Rotating them evens out that wear, and balancing each wheel while it is off the car keeps the ride smooth.
